Himym Jason Segal Vow I Say Again
Existence a regular on a popular television series is often an interesting double-edged sword for actors. On the one hand, it tends to be extremely lucrative in a profession where beingness unemployed is much more than common that actually having a regular gig. On the other paw, actors sometimes experience equally though they are "trapped" working on a regular series, whether because they are non fans of the fabric or because they feel that their role has inverse from when they were originally cast or possibly only because they adopt the freedom to exercise other work, like films (i of the most common reasons for actors leaving a popular television set serial is because they want to go brand motion pictures instead). In by TV Legends Revealeds, I accept featured the results of such conflicts for actors like Denise Crosby on Star Trek: The Adjacent Generation and Robert Downey Jr. on Ally McBeal. Today nosotros look at the curious case of Jason Segel and How I Met Your Mother. Different the other actors, Segel never really left the series, but his frustrations with the show somewhen were worked into the bear witness itself with hilarious effect.
How I Met Your Mother ran for nine seasons on CBS from 2005-2014. Ostensibly the story of a man in the future telling his children the complicated story of how he met their mother, the show was really mostly about a grouping of five friends and their diverse life experiences throughout their late 20s and early 30s.
While the bear witness was eventually ane of CBS' about popular sitcoms, information technology struggled in the ratings for the start three seasons (leading to "dorsum-up" mothers if the evidence was canceled before than expected, every bit detailed in this earlier Telly Legends Revealed). So the actors on the show certainly did not wait the show to last nine seasons. Nor did the producers, who institute themselves increasingly straining how long a guy could tell the story of how he met his kids' female parent. This time limitation was particularly evident in the final season of the show, which took place over just a single weekend. The serial as well plant itself in an interesting position towards the end of its run. In the early days it was at the mercy of CBS, just in the late seasons it was CBS who wanted to keep the evidence going while the cast and crew were a bit unsure. The show's producers and the cast were locked in for viii seasons afterward getting a ii-yr renewal during Season half-dozen. The renewal for the final season, though, went downwards to the wire and was announced towards the finish of the eighth season (right before the creators would take had to commit to plotting a series finale if a bargain had not been reached).
The biggest holdout among the cast was Jason Segel, the second-youngest member of the main cast and the one with mayhap the nigh promising motion-picture show career (The series' youngest role player, Colbie Smulders, is a featured cast fellow member in Marvel'southward ultra-pop Avengers flick franchise, just she was not really the star of whatsoever the films). During his run on the show he starred in a number of films, including 2 hit films he wrote himself, Forgetting Sarah Marshall and The Muppets (co-written with Nicholas Stoller).
In 2010, when he was locked in for 3 more seasons of the show, Segel gave an interview with GQ where he openly mocked the conventions of the show:
It's an amazing place to be. But when you go an player, part of information technology, the undercover office of it, is that you don't want to work a regular ix-to-v job. And the clandestine part of a TV bear witness is that information technology's a nine-to-five chore. And eight years is longer than any relationship I've always been in, it'southward longer than any school I went to. I recollect after eight years, I'll feel like I honorably did my commitment. It's funny--it'south the greatest problem in the world to take. Jeez--I'grand the luckiest guy in the world. But when your idol is Peter Sellers, playing i grapheme for eight years isn't what yous're trying to do. I don't really feel similar I have that much more than to offer with this character. Maybe if nosotros got divorced or something--but that's not gonna happen. It's gonna be some iteration of, similar, my TV wife opens the fridge, and she'due south like, "What happened to the birthday cake?" And I walk in with a footling frosting here [points to corner of rima oris] like, "What birthday cake?"
In the 2013 picture This is the End, Segel appears as himself (like all the other cast members in the film, which is most what would happen if the rapture took place in modernistic day Hollywood) and once again makes fun of How I Met Your Female parent using the exact same joke from the earlier GQ interview, serving both to tease the show but also to tease the "controversy" (quotes because there really wasn't much of a backfire) Segel acquired when he mocked his own show back in 2010.
Well, in 1 of the very last episodes of How I Met Your Mother, "Vesuvius" (Episode nineteen of Season ix), a bunch of the characters are gathered effectually watching the movie Wedding Bride Too. In the How I Met Your Female parent universe, Wedding ceremony Bride was a popular moving picture written past the hubby of a woman Ted Mosby near married earlier in the series. It tells the story of Ted'south relationship with the adult female, only with Ted as the stereotypical romantic comedy villain (with the writer of the movie being the hero, as he gets back together with his ex-married woman merely when she is about to ally Ted). At one point in the movie's sequel, "Ned Moseley" notices that someone ate the chocolate cake that he had put bated in the refrigerator. His friend "Narshall" and so walks in with chocolate frosting effectually his mouth.
Segel's character, Marshall, is offended that they would depict him in such a way and threatens to sue. His friends then remind him that that actually did happen and he sheepishly admits that they're right, but that Ted should have put a notation on the cake if he didn't want it to exist eaten.
That's a pretty awesome in-joke by the bear witness (Barbara Adler wrote the episode in question).
